Hi All,

We've had an email about a new event in London, which sounds like a lot of fun. It's billed as:

"10 miles of running and as much of a swim as you fancy on a journey from Hampstead's ponds via Parliament Hill Lido and The Serpentine to Tooting Lido."

To sign up, please go to http://www.theswimmer.org

The first one is on the 13th October and ... doing my best copy and pasting .... the info is below:

Route
A suggested route is here but you can make your own way from swim to swim. It's a bit of urban orienteering with swimming.

The swims are 4 of London's finest pools and the run takes in Hampstead Heath, Primrose Hill, Regent's Park, Hyde Park, Battersea Park, Clapham Common and Tooting Common. So, that's 5 or 6 of London's best parks as well.

Times
It's an early start as we have to reach the Serpentine by 9.15am.
Meet at 7.15am at Hampstead Tube (Northern Line) and jog down to the Hampstead mixed Pond (10 minutes) for a 7.30am swim.
Finish, around 2-3 hours later at the Tooting Bec Lido depending on how fast you go and how many stops you have.

What to wear and kit
You travel with your own kit so best to keep it fairly minimal and leave the wetsuit at home.

Costs
Free to enter but you do have to pay for your swims which are:
£2 at Hampstead's ponds
£2 at Parliament Hill
Free for the first swim at Serpentine and Tooting as member guests; this is why numbers are limited to 20 at the moment.

The event organisers have said that it will be possible to transport a small number of wetsuits as they have a support vehicle.

We are also talking to them about a November event, which would finish at Brockwell Lido.

Thanks

Helen

Cool

Looks like fun but don't fancy leaving my wetsuit at home, bit cold at the moment!

That sounds brilliant but unfortunately I can't make the 13th Oct - hopefully I can join in the next one!

As Helen says, there will be a car to transport your wetsuit and end clothes while you run.

Just got some more info from the event organisers ... if you're not up for the full 10 miles, you can cheat and get public transport some of the way ...

The additional info ....

  1. "We're going to have a car at the start and at Parliament Hill, Serp and Tooting for the wetsuits. We can transport kit between but most swims will only be a few lengths. It's honestly not that tough temp wise at the moment.
  2. I'm going to publish some 'cheats' or points where you can hop on a bus, train, tube and make it easier.
  3. It's easy to split the race in two. The first section of Hampstead to Serpentine is by far the most dramatic as you run Parliament Hill, Lido, Primrose Hill, Regents park, Marble Arch and Hyde Park to the Serpentine. That is not too hard and really quite an amazing way to see the city. This is about 4.5miles of running so manageable for a reasonably fit person."
I can't do the event on the 13th, but the next one is the 10th November (finishing at Brockwell) - I will definitely do this (and will be using as many of the public transport cheats as is decent ;-))

Hello

Will here, I'm the organiser of The Swimmer www.theswimmer.org.

Just to echo Helen and Laura - we have got a support car if folks want us to transport wetsuits and kit between swims. And yes, jummping off at any point is emminently forgiveable.

It really is an amazing way to see London and the pools, I did a trial run last friday afternoon and it was great (if a bit tough on the legs).

All the best and hope a few of you fancy a crack at it next week or for the Brockwell finish on Nov 10th.

All the best

Will

I have signed up, but as a non-runner (even to catch a bus) I am hoping for some leeway in allowing me to ride my bike between venues. Will Watt, any thoughts on this?
